As part of our services, you can apply for any type of insurance in our office, or we can send an agent to your house, if you live far from our office. The insurance system in Costa Rica has been monopoly of the government, but since CAFTA has been just approved, the insurance market will gradually open to international insurance companies. Some international health insurance will cover you in Costa Rica, but not all of them, so we suggest to check with your company for the coverage out of your country. In Costa Rica there are only two insurance companies, and both of them belong to the government. The CCSS (Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social) or Caja, as it is called by Costa Ricans, offers the public health insurance. And INS offer all types of insurance: health, house, life, car, etc. The public health insurance in Costa Rica is very good and compared to North America, it is very inexpensive. Out of US Medicare does not cover you, so it is suggested to get CCSS insurance once you get your residency in Costa Rica. The INS is the third biggest insurance company of Latin America. INS offers several plans for health insurance as any other insurance company around the world. If you want to get health insurance you must get residency first in the case of CCSS, and in the case of INS your application for residency must be already filed in Immigration. There are many INS insurance brokers in Costa Rica, so if you receive a different quote, it means that the coverage is different.
