History of Costa Rica 

Alajuela is know for the plantations of Mangoes. Alajuela is locates west of San Jose. It is the city of Juan Santamaria, a soldier that burn “La Casona de Santa Rosa” in 1856, in where William Walker, a general of the US confederate army brought soldiers to conquest Central America. They actually conquest part of Central America. But, when Juan Santamaria burn the house in where they where, they lost mostly of their guns, and they lost all the power in Central America. Alajuela also has the Poas Volcano, it is famous in the world because it has one of the biggest craters of the world, and because is one of the only volcanoes in where you can reach to the crater by car. The biodiversity of this volcano is larger than any other, near any volcano in Costa Rica.

Cartago the old capital of Costa Rica, it’s more conservative in their costumes. It is located east of San Jose. The Irazu volcano has provide to this city with the most fertile land of Costa Rica. This is why, Cartago produce many different products, for the national market, and to export, such as potatoes, onions, lettuce, strawberries, and many exotic flowers. The “Jardin Lancaster” has one of the biggest productions of many types of Orchids. Cartago produces the best coffee of the world. It also has the two rivers famous in the world for rafting, the Reventazon and the Pacuare. Cartago is the most religious city of Costa Rica. The “Negrita” as is know the Virgin of Costa Rica, receives more than a million of visitors from all the country on August 1st, in what is called the “Romeria” because all the visitors walk to Cartago, to visit her. The revolution of 1948 took place mainly in Cartago.

Heredia, is known as the city of the flowers, is located north of San Jose. Heredia still have many buildings of the 19th. Heredia has many little towns, that makes you feel like if you are visiting a town of 50 or 60 years ago. It is the smallest province of Costa Rica, but it has access to San Jose, toward the south of the city, and to the San Juan river, the boarder with Nicaragua at the north. Heredia joined Cartago in 1823 against Alajuela and San Jose, in a little war that the seconds won. Heredia and Cartago wanted to join the Mexican Empire, but because they lost, Costa Rica, kept their independency.
